In Vienna and Bregenz, midday diesel prices at the cheapest gas stations were just under €1.90 per liter, while gasoline was around €1.70. According to E‑Control’s official price monitor, the median price reported on Sunday was €1.894 for diesel and €1.689 for regular gasoline. One week before the outbreak of the Iran war, average prices were €1.57 for diesel and €1.52 for gasoline.

Last Major Price Surge Occurred After Russia’s Attack on Ukraine

A similarly sharp increase in fuel prices was last seen in early 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In early March of that year, average prices for gasoline and diesel jumped by about 50 cents within two weeks, rising from around €1.50. Gasoline peaked at roughly €1.95, while diesel climbed to nearly €2.10.

On the markets, crude oil prices surged again on Monday. Overnight, the price of a barrel (159 liters) of Brent crude from the North Sea rose by up to 29 percent, reaching nearly $120. Although it later slipped slightly, it still traded at $103.23 on Monday morning—more than ten percent higher than on Friday.
